Valle de Guadalupe

Seasonal fine-dining under a 200-year-old Live Oak tree

Mexico’s emerging wine country, Valle de Guadalupe, is exploding in popularity and on the radar of food travelers thanks to the excellent wine and well-known chefs launching restaurants with unique dining experiences. One such being, Animalón, a seasonal restaurant founded by celebrity chef Javier Plascencia. The project, launched in 2016, is located on the same property as Finca Altonzano – his open-grill concept restaurant. Just a short distance away, surrounded by the vineyards and almost hidden under a 200-year-old live oak tree, you will find one of the most unique dining experiences in the world. In 2018, Javier Plascencia brought on executive chef, Oscar Torres, a Los Angeles native with extensive experience working under Michelin star chefs. He specializes in globally influenced cuisine, and the Mediterranean, ‘Franco-Afrique,’ India, and Southeast Asia inspire his dishes.

Like most restaurants in Valle, the chef’s mission respects the Baja lifestyle and honors neighboring producers by only using local ingredients. He showcases his creativity in his ever-changing 4, 6, or 8-course tasting menu. The creativity, presentation, and flavors of each course are exquisite. Wine pairings are optional and a great way to complete your dining experience. Animalón demonstrates its exceptional standards in its attentive service and the detailed explanation of each dish set in front of you. Your glass will never be empty, and the staff will go above and beyond to accommodate any special requests. It is also important to note that Vegetarian options are available for each course.

This spectacular tree, nestled among the stunning vineyards and distant hills, makes a grand statement from the outside. However, when you take the step inside the tree, the real awe begins. You’ll feel as if you were transported into another world – the setting is simply magical. If you arrive before sunset, be sure to take time and sneak away from your table to view the sun setting over the vines. As the sky changes and daylight disappears, head back under the tree to witness the surroundings transform into an even more intimate dining experience. There is something extraordinary about sitting beneath a 200-year-old tree, especially at night when the glowing lanterns hanging from the sprawling branches add the perfect amount of warm light to the enchanting ambiance.

When you arrive at Animalón, be sure to take the time to enjoy the newly-designed outdoor lounge. Chef Plascencia predicts this space “will become a destination of its own.” And for a good reason, the area welcomes guests with an intimate seating area, firepit, craft cocktails, and music. Charming by day and magical by night, an experience at Animalón should not be missed. Summer to fall, the menu changes each month, and the season comes to an end in November or December, dependant on the weather.

Insider Tips: For parties of more than 4, please contact the restaurant directly for reservations. Reservations can be made via Animalón’s website. Vegetarian options available.
