Lechuza

Valle de Guadalupe

An intimate vineyard with remarkable wine

First established in 2003 by Ray and Patty Magnussen, Lechuza vineyard is a must-visit winery within the Valle de Guadalupe. The winery strives to offer the best hospitality in the Valle and they don’t disappoint. The family-run winery wants visitors to feel like extended family members, which is why all of their tastings are hosted by several members of the Magnussen family. Because they want to create an intimate affair, tastings are by appointment only. While this may hinder some of your plans, it’s well worth going the extra mile because Lechuza winery is one of the best in the region.

Luchuza in Spanish means owl, which is seen all throughout the beautiful property. Story goes that there was a period of time when owls flourished in the area and the owners would love to watch the owls flourish on the burgeoning winery in Lechuza’s humble beginnings. The couple thought it was perfectly fitting to name their new winery after the barn owl they so loved to spend hours watching.

The Magnussen family bought the land that would later become Lechuza in 2003 and has since grown it to become one of the Valle’s most brilliant wineries, creating some of Baja’s most prestigious offerings. Their wines are often described as expressive, balanced and complex, showcasing the Valle’s ability to produce world-class grapes. Their harmonious distinct wines are memorable and compliment the region’s bountiful food options.

Besides their top-tier wines, Lechuza vineyard promotes sustainability and regional stewardship (a common theme in the Valle). Each and every season provides more and more opportunities to not only practice lessons learned in past seasons, but to also try new advancements in both wine making and grape growing. Lechuza winery blends traditional winemaking techniques with modern conveniences to produce their fine wines.

Their origin comes from the Valle’s futile soil that provides optimal grape-growing conditions. The driving principal behind their winemaking philosophy is to share the region’s warmth and abundance through unique wine that could only be found in Baja. The varietals grown at Lechza include Tempranillo, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Cabernet and their wine continues to improve with each vintage they produce.

To compliment the delicious wines, the property is just as intoxicating as their tastings. The gorgeous property is idyllic and cozy, providing you with a relaxing atmosphere that makes you recall home. They are neighbors with notable Laja Restaurant, and you can literally smell the enticing aromas that come out of the kitchen daily.

Our Recommendation

EAT AT DELI-STREET FOOD TRUCK

Before you hit the next vineyard make sure to try Deli Street food truck inside the grounds of Lechuza. The year-round Deli Street food truck is run by Luis Fernando Zavala and it provides guests fresh and unique eats that pair perfectly with Lechuza wines. Taco offerings include steak, chicken, carnitas, lamb and seafood. The ceviches are exceptional and there are plenty of vegetarian options like the cauliflower tacos. The menu changes frequently since all ingredients are fresh kind of a farm-to-truck concept (if that’s a thing).

Insider tip: make sure you have some dollars or pesos with you since it’s a cash-only food truck.
